Charles Pierre Baudelaire was a 19th century French poet, translator, and literary and art critic whose reputation rests primarily on Les Fleurs du Mal ; ; The Flowers of Evil which was perhaps the most important and influential poetry collection published in Europe in the 19th century. Threads collapsed expanded unthreaded. Very verbose with flowery and excessive language. Samuel is a “fantastical and sickly creature, whose poetry shines forth much more in person than in his works”.

The book is very much in dialogue with the French authors that Baudelaire wished to dethrone and it prevents his authentic and individual voice from emerging. Not surprisingly, the romantic and sensitive poet falls for the beautiful dancer who performed as columbine in a vast pantomime and bonded with Samuel Cramer through truffles, conversing and making love. Still, Melville House puts out a beautiful little edition, and I’m still glad to put the book on my shelf.

While this is not Baudelaire’s finest work nor a milestone in the Romantic tradition, this novella is a gem for readers.

I backed into the living room, ground and brewed more coffee, and sat out the day among my books. The character of Fanfarlo, meanwhile, pirouettes on the edge of things; she’s harder to see, much less clearly defined, more a notion than a person, a silky sensual being fond of rare meat and potent wines, a dangerous domestic snare for the hot-headed young artist, a rock submerged in a turbulent sea.

Fanfarlo began as a book full of promise for me: I have a great deal of trouble emphathising with or understanding people’s motives, so obviously this was a difficult book for me. An eaten truffle intimates the eternal, having “the effect of many zeros after a number”; the smallness of a bedroom marks the vastness of the experience of love it contains; most importantly, the rouge and “cheap finery” the poet insists La Fanfirlo wear during lovernaking is a parodistic counterpart to something greater -a love which is “less a matter of the senses than of the intellect.
